The “de Neufville” came as Reformed Protestant refugees to Frankfurt . The family originated from the county of Artois . In 1575 were Robert and Sebastian citizens of the city . Two years later, married Sebastian (1545-1609) mit der Anna Cochx (Cook) and quickly came through his cloth trade to large fortune . He was the founder of the Frankfurt branch. Son Sebastian (1581-1634) extended trade to silk , gems and metals and the assets increased considerably .
Most family members were merchants , some were lawyers, and as such were particularly frequent in the 18. century as councilors , residents or agents at the service of people living in the vicinity of Frankfurt princes and counts ; other family members were officers , physicians and other scholars , professors in colleges and universities .
The family spread to Nuremberg , Amsterdam, London und bis New York aus. After the establishment of the bank in the 17. century the dukes of Lorraine , later Nassau houses and other famous personalities to their customers . The family was active in local politics and some received the Prussian or Austrian nobility recognition under the name “ von Neufville ”
